Beautiful Basel

Updated: Feb 17, 2023

As I stepped off the train in Basel, Switzerland, I knew I wanted to make the most of my time exploring this beautiful city. I decided to veer off the beaten path and take a different route out of the train station, but soon realized I was completely lost. I played it cool and pretended to be taking photos, while secretly trying to figure out where I was.

Walking straight ahead, I spotted a building that looked like a cathedral and knew I was on the right track. Cathedrals always seem to be a reliable marker in Europe and I was right! I stumbled upon a charming shop with an antique aesthetic and charming chandeliers that gave off a modern vibe. I couldn't resist ordering an ice coffee (caramel macchiato) to go, which turned out to be the best I've ever had in Europe.

I spent the day visiting the Tinguely Fountain, Museum Tinguely, Rhine River, Art Museum, Cartoon Museum, Offene Kirche Elisabethen, Mittlere Brucke, Peterplatz, Spalentor, Marktplatz, Rathaus and the Basler Munster. Each spot was beautiful, but the Rathaus and Basler Munster were particularly breathtaking. The Rathaus was made of red sandstone with impressive bell towers, flags and frescoes, while the Basler Munster was adorned with stunning embellishments that told an incredible story.

After a full day of exploring, I ended my self-guided tour at the Markthalle, where I was able to walk around the food hall and sample dishes from different countries represented. I even got to try Persian Gulf food.

Overall, it was an amazing day of exploring the charming city of Basel and I highly recommend adding it to your travel itinerary.
